It is very impotant that students are taught educational software that will be important to their success later in life. Most importantly students should be taught how to effectively use Word processing in Microsoft Word. I can’t even begin to explain how often college students and even high school students are required to use MS-Word. About 95% of my teachers require that all work handed in is to be typed. Not only is it important for college but in the work force as well. My job doesn’t require any typing but many other jobs do. For example documents, case studies, doctor’s office, receptionist, lawyer, ect. Word Processing Saves time and looks nice. Secondly, students should be taught presentation software. Students will use presentation software in place of written reports and to present projects. Using powerpoint helps presentations to be more creative and interesting. Students can use visual aids at well as links to important sites to help with presenting. Powerpoint is also interactive. Drill & Practice is important educational software because students recieve immediate feedback. When students come across a question they don’t know or understand and make a guess, it is very helpful to recieve immediate feedback on that question. When I study for tests I always make flashcards which is a very time consumeing process just to make them. It would save a ton of time to use drill and practice instead. The benefits of Integrated Learning System (even though I have never used it) is that the program is highly effective, self pacing, motivational, and that teachers can personalize instruction to meet the students need. It almost seems to good to be true. I think that ILS would be useful because it is a combination of drill and practice, tutorial, simulation, problem solving, and word processing. I would like to learn how to use this system myself and this could possibly be more important than learning any of the previous educational systems I mentioned above. Last of all students should be taught how to use web-based education. Obviously I think this is impotant because ED 205 is web- based. Web-based courses are convient most of all. They allow students to somewhat work at their own pace. It also eliminates commuting to campus.
I ranked these systems in this order from personal experience. The sytems that I listed first are the ones I use most often (besides the web-based education). At least once a week I use MS-word and that is why I believe it is the most important for students to be educated about. I put web-based instuction last because it is so easy to use and not a lot of instruction is needed. If you gave a good instructor then the web-based course is pretty much self explanatory.
I think that MS-word should be taught around fourth grade because that is when students are able to read and write pretty good. Presentation software should be taught staring in fifth and sixth grade. Drill and practice and ILS should be taught around third and fourth grade simply because the students should be able to read. However, I’m first and second graders could use headphones with simple tasks. Web-based education should be taught in middle school because there really is no need for it until after you graduate high sschool
